M80 Upgrade

Early works
In December 2008, early works started to add an extra lane Altona-bound between Deer Park Bypass and Boundary Road. This was completed July 2009.

Further works during 2009 and 2010 include:

  • widening Tilburn Road Bridge
  • installing ramp signals on the Altona-bound entry ramps to the Deer Park Bypass at two locations
  • installing ramp signals on the Altona-bound entry ramps to the M80 Ring Road at four locations

Tullamarine Freeway to Sydney Road
In July 2009, a construction partnership was announced between VicRoads, Thiess, Parsons Brinckerhoff and Hyder, referred to as the Tulla Sydney Alliance, to begin the upgrade of the first section of the M80 Ring Road between the Tullamarine Freeway and Sydney Road.

Works started in December 2009 between Pascoe Vale Road and Merlynston Creek, Glenroy. The section between Tullamarine Freeway and Sydney Road is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.

Western Highway to Sunshine Avenue
The second section of the M80 Ring Road to be upgraded will be from the Western Highway to Sunshine Avenue, St Albans.

Tenders have been advertised for a portion of works between Furlong Road and Sunshine Avenue, with construction to commence by mid 2010. Improvements will include an extra lane in both directions including widening of the bridge over Furlong Road to improve traffic flow.

Planning works
The project team is also undertaking planning and preconstruction activities for future sections of the M80. The M80 Ring Road will be upgraded in sections to minimise disruption with the most congested sections being worked on first.
