News about MYKI
Myki is designed as the replacement to a number of ticket systems in Victoria, primarily the current Metcard (metropolitan Melbourne) and V/Line (regional) ticketing systems.
Myki will also operate on local bus services in many regional centres,
including Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Moe, Morwell, Traralgon, and Warrnambool.
What is MYKI?
MYKI is long life smartcard which has a microchip installed in the card.
The smartcard will store ticket and fare information, and fares will be based on the time-zone fares currently used by the Metcard system. Myki will store monetary value, and the best fare for the user's trip will be calculated automatically for the user.
The MYKI rollout Plan
The myki rollout is expected to commence from mid 2008.
The MYKI ticketing systerm rollout will being with a customer pilot in Greater City of Geelong later this year and will continue into early 2008.
This will allow commuters plenty of time to get used to the new ticketing system.
Participants for the pilolt will be recruited by a market research company based on their transport use.
How do I can scan my MYKI card?
To scan MYKI card, you need to hold the MYKI card approximately 10 cms away from the MYKI scanner. The scanning of the card needs to be an intentional action but does not require direct contact with the scanner.
It doesn't matter which way you hold you MYKI card in order to swipe it.
Where will the barries be located so I can scan My MYKI card?
The Locations of the MYKI scanners will vary for the different modes of public transport, but will remain consitent to the current arragements for most modes of transport.
MYKI scanners will be located on Melbourne train station platforms at the entry points to the platform.
MYKI scanners will be located on both of the entry doors on both sides of the vehicle.
MYKI scanners will be located at the entry point of the bus, next to the driver and at the rear door.
V/Line Train Services:
MYKI scanners will be located on V/Line train station platforms at the entry points to the platform.
V/Line train conductors will carry small, light hand-held devices similar to personal organisers which will use to check myki once you boarded the train. Note this device will be used on all modes of transport.
V/Line Buses:
MYKI scanners will be located at the entry point of the bus or the bus driver will have an light hand-held device to scan the smartcard. More information will come to hand.
